This gear-shifter knob features a 5-speed shift pattern and was utilized in the W201 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 models, equipped with a Getrag five-speed manual dog-leg gearbox. The unique shift pattern has the first gear positioned to the left and down from neutral, while the remaining 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears form a simple H pattern, allowing for fast and easy gear selection. Unlike most Mercedes-Benz models, the 5th gear in these specific models was not intended as an overdrive but designed for reaching the top speed.
This gear-shifter knob is not an OEM product, but rather a meticulously crafted reproduction of the original. The leather and stitching used in its construction are identical to those found on the original gear-shifter knob. Additionally, the shift pattern stamp is cast from the authentic OEM stamp. Originally, Mercedes-Benz had intended to develop a sporty version of the W201 for use in Group B rally. However, Audi's introduction of the A2 Quattro, the first 4WD car for rallying in 1982, led to a change in plans. As a result, Mercedes-Benz decided to shift its focus to a Group A version of the baby Benz. In September 1983, the 190E 2.3-16 was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
